The World Masters Games 2025 Taipei and New Taipei will kick off May 17 at Taipei Dome, with more than 25,000 contestants and staff from 107 countries and territories taking part in the first Asian edition of the quadrennial event.
During a press event held May 8 in Taipei, officials from the Sports Administration said a parade will be staged in the city on the opening day involving over 10,000 athletes, coaches and staff. The agency welcomes citizens to take part and cheer for the athletes up close.
Themed “We Share the Same Sky,” the opening ceremony will spotlight a spirit of sharing and inclusion and showcase the two cities’ vitality and passion for sports. The ceremony is to be a global cultural celebration uniting the cities with the world, and features a dynamic fusion of traditional arts and contemporary performances.
The star-studded lineup includes Golden Melody-winning Indigenous singer Abao, hit band Accusefive, street dance icons Marcus Lin, Chrissy Chou and Yaobai, along with the Chinese Professional Baseball League cheerleading squad and table tennis champions Chuang Chih-yuan and Chiang Hung-chieh.
In addition to sports competitions, a WMG expo will kick off May 10 at the city’s Songshan Cultural and Creative Park with a raft of exhibitions, fun events and performances, offering information on the sporting event’s history.
The organizing committee said 2025 WMG is the largest sporting event ever to be held in Taiwan, and will help lay the foundation to host more large-scale sports competitions in the future. The Sports Administration, to become the first sports ministry later this year, called on the public to show warm support for the event. (SFC-E)
